Language translation online has come a long way, but it still has a long way to go. Online language translation will usually allow you to get the gist of the web page, but that is about it. You can decipher the essential meaning but you can never get the nuances. Sometimes it is hard to even figure out what is going on.

There are a lot of big problems with language translation online that will not soon be resolved. One of the biggest ones is context. It is not enough to decipher a passage word by word, or even sentence by sentence. Language translation online software, although it can usually guess at the most probable meaning of a word, often has trouble differentiating between different homonyms. Shades of meaning will escape it altogether, so unless you know what you are looking at to begin with, you might get a very different idea from that which the author is trying to convey.

And all of that is assuming that the language translations online is translating a flawlessly written piece of text. What if the web page being translated has mistakes in it? What if it has words that the translation program doesn't even know? What if it is written in a colloquial version of the language? In the face of any of these problems, language translation online software tends to break down. You will get a word here and there, but often they will seem to have a wildly strange meaning. The use of figures of speech and plays on words, one of the hallmarks of good writing, can completely undermine language translation online software. Even for English to Spanish or Spanish to English, languages that are extensively translated, the meaning is often garbled beyond recognition.

Of course, language translation online is a great place to find services for professional use. There are many excellent online language translator businesses that will hook you up with translators in any country, but they cost a fortune. For the rest of us, language translation online software has to be enough. For English speakers, it is not as big a problem as for the speakers of many other languages. Most of the Internet content is still in English. But as the Internet becomes more and more international, language translation online will become a bigger and bigger issue. Hopefully new and better technology will be designed to solve these problems.
