For most of us, our family doctor is the first person we think to see when we arent feeling well. In the case of an emergency, you may run to the emergency room, but even then, they will call your family doctor to come in to see you after you have been treated. Your family doctor should always keep an eye on your health, and should be interested in what goes on outside of their office. That doesnt mean they should be on call to you twenty four hours a day, but when you find a good family doctor, you should get the feeling that you are more than just an income to them.
When you move to a new town, you are going to want to find a good family doctor. If you dont know anyone in your new community yet, it may be hard for you to get good advice from anyone. You may have to search out a family doctor on your own. If you have not moved far from your old town, your old doctor may have a recommendation for you, but dont count on this. You may have to do some searching on your own.
You can find listings in the yellow pages for doctors. You want to find ones that are specifically listed as a family doctor. You may have to call quite a few before you find one that is accepting new patients. You should go in for an appointment to decide if you like the family doctor you have chosen, and also find out what they offer as far as family care and how available they are to you. You dont want a family doctor that has so many patients that you have to wait six weeks for an appointment.
You can also search online for a family doctor, though this may not answer all of your questions. You can find community listings in some cases, and in others, you may find nothing. Another option might be to call your insurance company for a list of doctors in your area that accept your insurance. This may help narrow down your list. If you havent found anything in a few weeks, you might want to ask someone at work for a recommendation. Just remember, however, that even with a recommendation, you may not like a family doctor for one reason or another, and you may have to keep searching. Never accept what you consider to be second-class care.
