STD Treatment
Unfortunately, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are quite prevalent in this country and in many countries throughout the world. STD treatments are available for all cases, but sometimes the damage caused by the infection has progressed to far and cannot be reversed. The only to way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases from occurring is through education and prevention; using condoms and safe sex practices are proven preventive measures, and should be used if there is any doubt about a partners sexual history. The alternative is having to seek and undergo STD treatment, and live with the consequences of irresponsible actions that continue to be a factor long into the future.
STD treatments vary depending on what type of sexually transmitted disease has been contracted and the severity of the infection. Common sexually transmitted diseases include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital warts, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), genital herpes, and Hepatitis B & C. Hepatitis B is highly contagious and can live on a surface in a dried drop of blood for up to seven days. It is a chronic sexually transmitted disease that is easily prevented through a series of vaccinations. There is no cure for HIV, which can progress to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS; a certain death sentence, that is easily transmitted via sexual contact, shared needles, and to unborn babies in utero. STD treatment for HIV and AIDS patients can be quite extensive, not to mention expensive, and is something that must be taken everyday for the rest of their lives.
Pharmaceutical research has produced a number of drugs that have proven to be effective STD treatments. Most sexually transmitted diseases can be cured with antibiotics, such as Zithromax or Penicillin, and some like genital herpes require STD treatment sporadically to control uncomfortable symptoms during flare ups. However, the best STD treatment is the use of a condom or total abstinence. Prevention is the only way to avoid contracting a sexually transmitted disease and the terrible repercussions that can result. STDs are not only physically damaging, but emotionally damaging as well, and self esteem can be deeply affected. The emphasis must be on providing more education to groups at highest risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, the urban poor and the young adult population. Education is an important part of STD treatment, the goal being that it wont happen again, and that patients will pass on this knowledge to others who may also be at risk.
