The custom built trailers business is something that I never would have even thought about if I hadn't had a brother-in-law who was knee-deep in it. Of course, I had passed those car hauler trailers on the freeway without ever giving them a thought. Many of those are built from scratch. Each car design is different, you see, so you need custom built car trailers to be able to haul them all. Race car trailers, in fact, are even more specialized. A race car team will pay tens of thousands of dollars to make sure that their investment is adequately protected ? as well they should. The custom built trailer business is a really lucrative one, and one that I am glad that I got involved in.
of course, for me, the most interesting ones are the custom built display trailers. These are custom built trailers that are designed for purposes other than hauling alone. Circuses and other traveling exhibits need innovative custom built trailers meant to work for a variety of purposes at once. A custom built trailer for a circus will typically need to provide room to haul, to live in, to work in, and to display exhibits. That way, the circus team can save time and money on set up. All they have to do is to park the custom built trailers, flip a few switches, rearrange things a bit and everything is ready to go. Building custom trailers for these events can be frustrating, but it is also a fascinating business. I love solving problems, and working with custom built trailers allows me to be a problem solver.
One of the problems with custom built trailers is the liability issue. Although we are technically not liable when people get into crashes and have things in a custom built trailer ruined, nonetheless people in this business get sued all the time. People have all kinds of unreasonable expectations from their custom built trailer. They expect one of our products to be able to protect fragile equipment from hundred mile an hour head-on collisions when in fact this is impossible. We do the best we can, but there is only so much you can do to get around the laws of physics. Nonetheless, we have excellent lawsuit protection so it has never been a problem. Besides that, our custom built trailers business has been very lucky. Only one of our trailers has ever been involved in a serious accident.
