Both men and women need security in this world of danger. In big cities, it lurks in shadows and around corners constantly. Every day we hear of violent attacks against the elderly and women. To secure themselves, some people take self defense classes, which can prove to be time consuming and expensive. Others carry guns, but those can be as dangerous as the brutes they are meant to defend against. One defense, however, that people might count on when used properly and in the right situation, is mace spray.

Mace spray comes in two forms, hand-size tubes or larger canisters. When you're being attacked, you don't have time to dig around in a purse or glove compartment. With a hand-size tube of mace spray attached to your key chain, you can pull it out of your pocket quickly and spray the attacker. You can carry it in your pocket and walk unafraid. Unfortunately, in some states the law prohibits the tube form but will allow citizens to possess the larger canister form. You can keep this larger form in a convenient place, like your bedside table, your car, or in a purse.

The original mace formula was marketed under the name Chemical Mace in 1962. An aerosol tear gas, mace was made by Lake Erie Chemical. Today, Mace is a registered trademark of Mace Security International Today, The original mace formula is illegal in most western countries. The tear gas has been replaced by a potent pepper spray.

Mace has proved to be such an effective defense against attacks that even some police departments use it to subdue violent criminals. In some training situations, police trainees are required to take a direct spray of mace to the face with open eyes in order to fully comprehend its effects.

People have said that mace spray feels like ?Having gasoline poured all over your face and then lighting it?. Its effects vary from person to person. Some people who are intoxicated with alcohol, amphetamines, or cocaine may not feel any effect at all. Normally, if sprayed directly into open eyes, the eyes will shut because of the intense burning sensation it causes. Inhaling mace causes a feeling of suffocation. With eyes shut, gasping and suddenly disoriented, the attacker becomes the attacked and will most likely panic and retreat.

The effects of mace spray are real and serious. The irritation to the eyes, the constriction of the throat may be serious enough to require medical treatment. This may be true even if the person, such as an intoxicated one, does not feel the effects, which may last anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours.

Whether you are traveling or just want to be able to sleep with a sense of security, remember that mace spray can be dangerous to yourself and others. It can also be the difference between being the victim of a violent attack and being a victor in defense of your own life.
